After almost four years of hemming and hawing, Google’s decided to keep third-party cookies in Chrome. Plot twist, right? Instead of kicking cookies to the curb, they’re now talking about giving users “options” on how they want to be tracked.

Google originally set April 2025 as the doomsday for third-party cookies. Now, they’re not so sure. Why? They claim they’ve had some heart-to-hearts with the bigwigs — regulators, publishers, developers, you name it. And they’ve realized that building ad systems that don’t invade privacy might actually be a bit tricky for online advertisers.

So instead of pulling the plug on cookies, Google’s cooking up a “new experience” in Chrome. Users will get to choose between keeping those pesky third-party cookies or using something called Privacy Sandbox.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is still a bit skeptical of this emerging narrative. They point out that while browsers like Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies by default, Chrome’s still letting them run wild. And this Privacy Sandbox thing? EFF says it’s just shifting control from third-party trackers to Google.
